FAQs

1. When is the best time to visit Zimbabwe?

The best time for visiting Zimbabwe, particularly for game viewing, is during the dry winter season from May to October. This period offers mild temperatures and minimal rainfall. However, note that September and October can be exceptionally hot and dry.

2. What are the top things to do in Zimbabwe?

1. See the magnificent Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a renowned tourist attraction in Zimbabwe. During the peak flood season, the spray from the falls can be seen from approximately 50 kilometers away, creating a mesmerizing natural spectacle known as "The Smoke That Thunders." Stretching 1.7 kilometers in width, the falls span the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, offering breathtaking viewpoints along pathways that wind along the gorge's rim. The town of Victoria Falls, located nearby, is famous for its thrilling adrenaline sports and captivating safari activities, including bungee jumping, abseiling, white-water rafting, and horseback wildlife spotting.

 2. Explore Great Zimbabwe

Encompassing nearly 1,800 acres of land, Great Zimbabwe is a collection of ruins constructed by indigenous Africans, believed to be the ancestors of present-day Zimbabweans. Erected during the 13th and 14th centuries, these ruins were once the focal point of the Munhumutapa Empire, an expansive realm. The site comprises three distinct architectural groupings: the Hill Complex, the Valley Complex, and the Great Enclosure. Remarkably, these structures were meticulously built without mortar, using precisely positioned rectangular granite stones. Despite the absence of mortar, these extraordinary edifices have endured for over seven centuries, boasting stone walls up to 6 meters thick, 12 meters high, and a notable 60-meter section.

 3. Visit Chinhoyi Caves

Chinhoyi Caves in north-central Zimbabwe are remarkable attractions of geological significance. These limestone and dolomite caverns, located in Chinhoyi Caves National Park, hold cultural and historical importance, with evidence of ancient habitation. The "Wonder Hole," a deep blue pool formed by a collapsed cavern, is a captivating feature. Visitors can explore the illuminated Dark Cave and learn about the caves' history and folklore. Chinhoyi Caves also attract scuba divers for their underwater allure.

 4. Spot wildlife in Hwange National Park

Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is Africa's top wildlife destination, known for its abundant wildlife, including over 40,000 elephants. The park also boasts diverse herds of buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and predators like leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs. With over 400 bird species, it offers remarkable wildlife encounters. Camping facilities are available for visitors to enjoy the park's offerings throughout the day. Situated on the main road between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, it provides easy access. Despite its premier status, Hwange National Park offers a quieter and off-the-beaten-track safari experience.

 5. Discover Lake Kariba

Flowing into the waters of Lake Kariba, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world is the mighty Zambezi River. With an expansive area of 5,000 square kilometers and holding a staggering 180 billion tonnes of water, Lake Kariba showcases breathtaking beauty, as it reflects the surrounding landscape. Although slightly remote and requiring some effort to reach compared to other wildlife destinations in Zimbabwe, those who embark on the journey will be rewarded with an incredible safari experience. Alongside the iconic Big Five, the largest island in the lake is home to impalas, hippos, crocodiles, and a diverse range of birdlife. Exploring the wildlife of Lake Kariba is best done by embarking on a houseboat or motorboat, offering a wonderful and immersive experience.

 3. How to reach Zimbabwe from North America?

The best way to reach Zimbabwe is via flight. There are flights from New York, Washington D.C., Dallas, and more in the US, and Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary in Canada to Harare and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

 4. What to pack for Zimbabwe?

In Zimbabwe, casual and comfortable clothing is generally appropriate year-round. When packing for your safari, opt for lightweight clothing in light and neutral colors (excluding white, which gets dirty very easily during the game drives). It's advisable to pack a warm jacket or fleece for evening game drives and a pair of comfortable walking shoes.

 5. Which currency is used in Zimbabwe?

USD is used in Zimbabwe. Cash is highly valued in the country, so it's important to ensure you have enough funds to cover your expenses during your visit. Relying on ATM or bank withdrawals may not be reliable, so it's recommended to have sufficient cash on hand. Keep in mind that travellers' cheques and credit/debit cards are not widely accepted and may involve substantial fees.

The trip was absolutely breathtaking. Highly recommend is the day trip to Botswana it made our whole honeymoon worth it as it rained in Kruger and they had to cut the excursion short (we didn’t get to see any animals). All in all it was great lodging and a number of excursions to pick from. Only recommendation is to fly from Johannesburg to Kruger & back due to the long travel time on the bus. Also at the start of the trip to fly straight into Zimbabwe as there was no time in Johannesburg.

We were treated to an experience of a lifetime and it truly was that. Our tour guides were the best you could possibly ask for. They were professional every step of the way. They were always there to help us from primate safaris in Rwanda to Ranger safaris from Arusha and was all set up by Indus travel. We are also very greatful to have had Naomi. She made sure we had all the info we needed and she was prompt and on time. Our trip went off with no problems and for that to happen all the right people were there because there was a lot happening in a short time. Thank you Indus for being there and supporting us it truly was a grand experience. CHEERS from the Timmers group.

Discover South Africa and Victoria Falls
Our visit to South Africa arranged through Indus Travel was wonderful and more than we had imagined. Indus Travel agents incorporated our requests for places to visit etc. with two of their own tours. They arranged for very polite, knowledgeable driver/tour guides for all our outings, for drivers meeting us at the airports and taking us to and from our hotels, for choosing very nice hotels and for convenient internal flights. We always felt safe without feeling overly chaperoned. Thank you Indus Travel, we will use you again and recommend you to our friends.
