Half Day Township Tour with Robben Island - Day 11 Icon

Join us for a unique journey through the three phases of South Africa’s history: its origins, the Apartheid era, and the New South Africa. Departing from Cape Town city center, our first stop is the Malay Quarter (Bo Kaap), where we’ll discuss the arrival of Dutch sailors in 1652, a pivotal moment in South Africa's history.  As we stroll along the charming cobblestone streets lined with brightly colored homes, your guide will explain the establishment of racial segregation. We’ll pass notable landmarks of Cape Town before heading to District 6, where we’ll witness the remnants of a once-thriving mixed-race community of 60,000 that was destroyed to create an exclusive area for white residents. Next, we’ll visit Langa, Cape Town's oldest Black African township, discussing the oppressive laws enacted by the Apartheid regime. In Langa, we’ll stop for photos at a site commemorating the 1976 student uprising, and we’ll cover the Pass Laws and the barracks for African migrant workers. If our tour is on a Sunday morning, we’ll also visit a local church, immersing ourselves in the vibrant and charismatic religious practices of the townships.

To wrap up the day, we’ll take an afternoon ferry trip to Robben Island (weather permitting and subject to seat availability), where former president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

Jewels of South Africa
I have traveled a lot, but South Africa really blew me away. Seeing lions and elephants up close in Kruger was unreal.. photos just don’t do it justice. One of those pinch-me moments was the sunset cruise near Victoria Falls, so serene and beautiful with prolific wildlife to boot. I was completely charmed by Cape Town, with its scenery, history and relaxed vibe.. Table Mountain was a highlight for me. Everything flowed so well without feeling rushed or overplanned, which I loved. It didn’t feel like a tour, it felt more like traveling with people who truly understand, love and know the destination.

Jewels of South Africa
At 55, I wanted a “big” family trip that blended wildlife, scenery, and cities, so my wife, our adult son, and I chose Indus Travels’ “Jewels of South Africa”—and it genuinely felt like three dream trips rolled into one, without me having to manage any of the moving parts. Starting in Johannesburg, flying up to Victoria Falls for sunset on the Zambezi, then on to Kruger for safari and finally finishing in Cape Town, the itinerary kept building in scale and variety: one day we were listening to the thunder of the falls, a few days later we were watching lions and elephants in Kruger, and then we were riding the cable car up Table Mountain and exploring the Cape of Good Hope. What I appreciated most as a husband and dad was how seamlessly Indus handled the logistics for all three of us—regional flights, transfers, park entries, game drives, and city touring—so our energy could go into sharing the experience instead of wondering what came next. The small-group format made it easy for our son to connect with other travelers, but we still had plenty of time together, whether that was comparing wildlife shots after a full day on safari, standing speechless at Victoria Falls, or walking the waterfront in Cape Town after the Rockwell dinner show. By the time we flew home, it felt less like we’d just “done” South Africa and more like we’d shared an 11‑day adventure as a family, with Indus Travels quietly keeping everything on track in the background.

The trip was absolutely breathtaking. Highly recommend is the day trip to Botswana it made our whole honeymoon worth it as it rained in Kruger and they had to cut the excursion short (we didn’t get to see any animals). All in all it was great lodging and a number of excursions to pick from. Only recommendation is to fly from Johannesburg to Kruger & back due to the long travel time on the bus. Also at the start of the trip to fly straight into Zimbabwe as there was no time in Johannesburg.
