| Belize Jungle and Beach - Upgrade to Superior Hotels | + $1000 |
Make your own way to your selected gateway airport for your international flight to Belize. Upon arrival, transfer to the rugged and remote Cayo District (around 2h30), a vast stretch of highland rainforests, cattle ranches, and pinelands. Located in western Belize and bordering on Guatemala's El Petén region, you'll find no beaches here. Still, you'll have countless opportunities to explore the great outdoors on foot, by horse, or via kayak, raft, or canoe.
Overnight in Cayo District
After breakfast, you will have a tour of the famous sites of Xunantunich - situated on the banks of the Mopan River. Xunantunich means "stone woman" in Mayan. Xunantunich was a thriving city near the end of the Classic Period (300-900 A.D.) with large plazas ringed with pyramids. The tallest is the 130-foot "El Castillo," which is large by Mayan standards and is only exceeded in Belize by the Caana pyramid at Caracol. The center of the site is composed of six major plazas surrounded by more than 25 temples and palaces. The large pyramid, El Castillo, is well known for the frieze or band of stucco decoration, which at one time extended around the entire temple. After a private tour of the site, guests can take some time to explore the town of San Ignacio before returning to the hotel.
Overnight in Cayo District
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. After that, travel through the scenic Mountain Pine Ridge area before going off-road to the mysterious Barton Creek Cave system. Along the way, pass through a traditional Mennonite community where horse and carriage rule the road. Then pick up your paddle and high-powered light for your half-day expedition into the Barton Creek Cave, used by the ancient Maya as a ceremonial center and burial site. Gently paddle your canoe along the scenic creek and, with lights shining, venture into the dark, winding cave system known as a Mayan underworld. Stalactites hang high overhead as you float past impressive calcite crystal formations in cathedral-like chambers. Knowledgeable guides leading this tranquil, low-intensity adventure discuss the relevance of the cave to the ancient Mayan people and the archaeological significance of this 7.5-kilometer (4-mile) limestone formation.
Overnight in Cayo District
Enjoy a free day in Cayo District, home to beautiful rivers, lush forests, and magnificent mountains. Soak in the dramatic landscape as you explore the place by yourself.
Overnight in Cayo District
Post breakfast, transfer to the Belize airport. Guests stop to visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary located 35 miles northwest of Belize City. Here guests can get an up-close encounter with the howler monkeys of Belize, locally known as "baboons" in English or "saraguate" in Spanish. The sanctuary is approximately 20 square miles along the Belize River and embodies a combination of dense jungle, pasture, farmland, and small villages. Howler monkeys which can be seen within a short hike through the jungle, get their name from their loud, guttural howls that can be heard up to five miles away. Male howler monkeys use their big voices to defend their turf. Other males within earshot answer howl by one troop. Everyone starts and ends the day by checking out where their nearest competitors are. In this way, they protect the food in their territory. After the tour, guests enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before continuing to Belize City airport to take a flight to San Pedro. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel.
Overnight in San Pedro
Have breakfast at the hotel before heading out for your tour. Explore the breathtaking marine life flourishing in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and dive its natural cut, 1-9 meters (3-30 feet) deep, through the reef. Hol Chan, which means "Little Channel" in Mayan, features an opulent coral garden, including stag horn corals and sea fans, where myriad sea creatures live and feed. Watch as harmless nurse sharks and graceful southern stingrays ply the shallow, crystalline waters in the aptly named Shark Ray Alley passage. Divers and snorkelers make this a must-do trip while in Belize. Important: Shoe size information is mandatory to operate this tour. Please make sure to send those details in advance to your sales representative. If you wish to reschedule this tour, 72hrs notice as a minimum will be required.
Overnight in San Pedro
* $10 USD Park fee per person, which guests must pay locally
Enjoy a free day in San Pedro. The streets are dotted with colorful buildings and shops, where you can search for local souvenirs to take back home as memories. Spend a day immersed in the unique culture as you explore the picturesque town yourself.
Overnight in San Pedro
At the proper time, transfer to the airport to catch your flight to Belize City and then the flight back home
