Tour to Galle - Day 5 Icon

Visit Galle, once the chief port of Ceylon and a town that is rich in history. It served as the center of the Dutch regime in the 17th century and the majestic Galle Fort (spanning 90 acres) bears testimony to this fact. The fort, a World Heritage Site, is one of the finest examples of a walled city built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later extended by the Dutch in 1663. Galle is one of the most well-preserved colonial-era cities in Southeast Asia and has been declared a World Heritage Site. Take a stroll through the Dutch-haunted streets listening to the creaks of wooden saloon doors and see how European architecture mingles with South Asian traditions. As you walk within the fort, you will witness the ‘old gates’ with the British coat of arms before coming across the oldest lighthouse in the area at Point Utrecht Bastion. Here, you will have a fantastic panoramic view of the southern Indian Ocean.

Wonders of Sri Lanka
As a 50-year-old Indian American, I'd always felt a deep yet distant connection to South Asia—the food, the spirituality, the philosophy—but had never ventured beyond India. Indus Travels' "Wonders of Sri Lanka" tour became my gateway to understanding the broader tapestry of our shared cultural heritage, and it profoundly moved my entire family. From witnessing sunrise over the ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress (a moment of pure awe), to meditating at the sacred Temple of the Tooth in Kandy where Buddhist devotion mirrors our own spiritual traditions, to exploring the lush tea plantations where I tasted Ceylon tea fresh from the source, Sri Lanka revealed itself as both familiar and exotic. What truly distinguished this experience was Indus Travels' deep cultural fluency: a guide who seamlessly explained Buddhist philosophy in ways that connected to our Hindu roots, curated visits to family-run spice markets where vendors treated us like cousins rather than customers, and an itinerary that balanced the iconic (Galle Fort, Nuwara Eliya) with the intimate—local homestays where we shared meals with Sri Lankan families and heard their stories firsthand. At 50, I'd thought my days of transformative discovery were behind me; instead, this tour reminded me that the most profound journeys happen when you return to your roots with fresh eyes. The pristine beaches of the south coast, the misty mountains, the genuine warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality—all of it felt like coming home to a place I'd never physically been. Indus Travels didn't just organize a tour; they facilitated a spiritual and cultural reconnection that my family will carry for the rest of our lives. This is more than sightseeing—it's intergenerational healing.
