DAY 3 - TASHKENT - URGENCH (By Flight) - KHIVA (B/-/D)

After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to the local airport for your flight to Urgench. Upon arrival, continue by road to Khiva — one of the most atmospheric cities on the ancient Silk Road. Drop your luggage at the hotel and meet your local English-speaking guide to begin your immersive journey into the historic wonders of this enchanting city. Your exploration begins in Ichan-Kala, the walled inner town of Khiva and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its cobbled alleys, clay-colored walls, and centuries-old monuments, Ichan-Kala feels like an open-air museum frozen in time. Visit the Muhammad Aminkhana Madrasah, the largest Islamic school in Central Asia, boasting 125 hujras (student cells) and once home to over 250 students. Just opposite stands the iconic Kalta Minor Minaret, a striking turquoise tower left unfinished at 26 meters — a captivating story of ambition cut short after the sudden death of Muhammad Amin Khan. Next, explore the Madrasah of Muhammad Rahim Khan, an enlightened ruler and celebrated poet known as Feruz, who championed literature, music, and education. Continue to the Kunya Ark Fortress, once the royal residence of Khiva's Khans. This citadel complex included everything from the khan’s private quarters and a mosque to the harem, mint, and even a stable — a full-fledged palace within a palace. Visit the Mausoleum of Said Allauddin, a serene and spiritual 16th-century structure dedicated to the revered Sufi Sheikh. Step into the unique Juma Mosque, famed for its forest of 212 carved wooden columns, some dating back to the 10th century — an architectural marvel unlike any other in Central Asia.

Your journey continues to the Tash Hovli Palace, also known as the “Stone Palace”, a 19th-century royal residence built by Allakuli Khan. Wander through its elaborately decorated harems, ornate reception rooms, and administrative quarters, each echoing tales of courtly life. Explore the Madrasah and Caravanserai of Allakuli Khan, once home to Khiva’s famed library and now a visual feast of Islamic architecture. Admire the Islam Khoja Complex, home to the tallest minaret in Khiva (57 meters) and a petite yet beautiful madrasah — a symbol of reform and modernization in the Khanate’s final years. Conclude your cultural deep dive at the Mausoleum of Pahlavan Mahmud, the spiritual heart of Khiva and resting place of the city’s patron saint. A masterpiece of Khorezm architecture, its richly adorned interiors and tranquil atmosphere offer a fitting finale to your day. Return to the hotel and enjoy a delicious dinner steeped in local flavors, capping off a day of timeless history and unforgettable sights in Khiva.

Overnight in Khiva

DAY 4 - KHIVA - BUKHARA (B/-/D)

After breakfast, check out from your hotel and meet your driver at the reception for your overland journey to Bukhara (approx. 450 km / 6–7 hours). Today’s route traces the footsteps of ancient caravans along the legendary Silk Road, crossing the vast expanse of the Kyzylkum Desert — a timeless landscape of golden sands, desert shrubs, and wide horizons. En route, pause to take in the panoramic views of the Amu Darya River, one of Central Asia’s lifelines, winding its way through the arid terrain. Stretch your legs, breathe in the desert air, and capture the raw beauty of this untouched landscape.

Arrive in Bukhara by late afternoon and transfer to your hotel. Take some time to rest and soak in the first impressions of this historic city, once a major center of Islamic learning and a treasure trove of architectural wonders. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Uzbek dinner hosted by a local family, complete with a colorful folklore performance that brings the region’s rich cultural heritage to life. This warm and immersive evening offers a perfect introduction to the spirit of Bukhara.

DAY 5 - BUKHARA (B/-/D)

After breakfast, meet your guide at the hotel reception and begin your immersive exploration of Bukhara’s architectural and cultural gems, a city that has stood as a beacon of Islamic scholarship and Silk Road commerce for centuries. Your day begins at the Lyabi-Hauz Ensemble (16th–17th centuries), a picturesque plaza once known as a bustling medieval trading square. Discover the Nodir Divan Begi Madrasah, the tranquil Honako, a retreat for Sufi mystics, and the majestic Kukeldash Madrasah, the largest in Bukhara. Don’t miss the whimsical monument to Khoja Nasreddin, the beloved folk character of Central Asia. Continue to the Magoki-Attari Mosque, dating back to the 9th century, believed to be one of the oldest mosques in Central Asia and possibly pre-Islamic in origin.

Wander through the atmospheric domed bazaars beginning with Toki Sarrafon, once the center of money exchange, and Toki Tilpak Furushon, the "Dome of the Hat Sellers," where local artisans still trade fine silks, carpets, and suzani embroidery in a vibrant oriental bazaar setting. Visit the Kosh Madrasah Ensemble, pairing the ornate Abdullaziz Khan Madrasah (17th century) with the historic Ulugbek Madrasah (15th century), a scholarly landmark from the Timurid era. Next, explore the majestic Poi-Kalon Ensemble, the spiritual heart of Bukhara. Stand beneath the towering Kalon Minaret, and admire the grand Kalon Mosque and Mir-i-Arab Madrasah, masterpieces of Islamic architecture dating from the 12th to 16th centuries. Stroll through the Toki Zargaron, or “Jeweler’s Dome,” once the hub of Bukhara’s fine jewelry trade. Visit the charming Sayfiddin Caravanserai, now a vibrant crafts center, and Tim Abdullakhan, a covered bazaar built during the Sheibanid dynasty. Conclude your day with a flavorful dinner at a local restaurant, where you’ll sample traditional Uzbek cuisine in the atmospheric setting of ancient Bukhara.

DAY 6 - BUKHARA (B/-/D)

After a delightful breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide and set off to explore the timeless wonders of Bukhara, a city steeped in spirituality, power, and artistic brilliance. Your day begins at the Mausoleum of the Samanids (9th–10th centuries), one of Central Asia’s oldest and most revered architectural gems. This beautifully preserved structure, made entirely of intricately patterned burnt bricks, stands as a testament to early Islamic artistry and symmetry. Continue to the Chashma-Ayub Mausoleum (12th–16th centuries), shrouded in legend and spiritual significance. It is believed that the biblical figure Job (Ayub) struck the ground here, creating the sacred spring that still flows today. Next, visit the elegant Bolo-Hauz Mosque (18th–20th centuries), once the Friday mosque for Bukhara’s nobility. Admire its stunning wooden columns reflected in the serene pool that gives the complex its name. Step back in time at the imposing Ark Fortress, the ancient “city within a city” that once housed the royal family, court officials, a treasury, and even a prison. From above, the fortress resembles the constellation of the Big Dipper—a celestial tribute etched into its very layout.

Later, travel just outside the city to the breathtaking Sitorai-Mokhi-Khosa Palace, the former summer residence of the last Emir of Bukhara. Built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the palace is an exquisite blend of local and European architectural styles. Now home to the Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts, it showcases opulent interiors, mirrored halls, and masterful craftsmanship. Wrap up your day at the whimsical Chor-Minor Madrasah, an iconic and unusual structure built in 1807 by the Turkmen merchant Khalif Niyaz-Kul. Inspired by Indian architecture, including the Taj Mahal, its four distinct minarets make it one of Bukhara’s most photographed landmarks. Return to your hotel in the evening for a traditional Uzbek dinner, reflecting on a day immersed in Bukhara’s regal past and spiritual soul.

Why is it important that I give my name as it appears on my passport when booking a tour?

Due to increased travel security and policies around the world, it is now a requirement that your airline ticket matches your first and last name exactly as it reads on your passport. Please note that any changes to the details of your air booking, could be subject to a change fee, penalties or cancellation.

For our packages that include flights, we do not usually assign seats. In most cases, you can request specific seats, but this may incur a small fee payable to the airline. For more information, contact our sales and reservations staff.

Once confirmed, are airlines seats always guaranteed?

In most cases, seat assignments are firm. However, airlines may sometimes reassign seats for operational reasons. This often happens at the last moment and is controlled by airline staff, with Indus Travel not being notified. Passengers are encouraged to reconfirm their seat assignments and any other special requests directly with their airline prior to departure.

Should I check-in online?

It always recommended and more convenient to check in online. It will shorten your waiting time at the airport, secure your seat assignments and other reservations.

Can I request a special meal on the flight?

Requests may be made for special meals. These requests will be sent on your behalf to the airline so long as Indus receives these request prior to your documents being issued. The availability of special meals will be based upon the specific airlines and will be at their discretion.

Can I use my frequent flier miles?

Accrued frequent flier miles cannot be used toward the purchase of Indus Travels’ airfare or used for class upgrades. However, airfare purchased through Indus Travels may qualify to earn you additional miles.
