DAY 5 - BAY OF ISLANDS (B/-/-)

Enjoy another delicious Kiwi breakfast before choosing one of the following excursions:

Option 1: Discover the Far North of New Zealand
Embark on a full-day coach tour to Cape Reinga, the northernmost tip of New Zealand, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea and where, according to Māori tradition, spirits begin their journey to the ancestral homeland of Hawaiki. Your day begins with a Bay Belle Ferry transfer from Russell to Paihia, where you will join a Great Sights coach (shared with other passengers) for a memorable journey to the very top of the North Island. Travel along the vast, sand-swept shoreline of Ninety Mile Beach (Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe) and experience the thrill of sandboarding down the towering dunes. At Cape Reinga, take in sweeping coastal views as you stand beneath the iconic lighthouse, then enjoy the remarkable drive along the expansive, unspoiled beach. Throughout the day, a knowledgeable local guide will share engaging stories and insights, bringing the region’s history, culture, and natural features to life. The tour concludes with your return ferry from Paihia to Russell aboard the Bay Belle Ferry.
Departure from Russell is at 7:00am, returning at approximately 7:00pm. Lunch is included.

OR

Option 2: Hole in the Rock Cruise and Tour of Russell
This morning, set out on a breathtaking cruise aboard a purpose-built catamaran, gliding through the pristine waters of the Bay of Islands and along the dramatic Cape Brett Peninsula. Enjoy views of the historic Cape Brett Lighthouse and the iconic ‘Hole in the Rock,’ one of the region’s most celebrated landmarks. Weather permitting, your vessel will navigate slowly through the Hole and into the impressive Grand Cathedral Cave. Throughout the journey, your skipper will share engaging and informative commentary. The Bay is teeming with marine life and native bird species, so keep an eye out for dolphins, whales, and seabirds as you cruise. The experience includes a stop at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island, where you may purchase lunch (own cost), take a swim, or enjoy a leisurely walk. This afternoon, return to Russell and meet a local guide for an entertaining exploration of the town’s colourful past—when rowdy sailors once earned it the nickname “the hell hole of the Pacific.” Visit some of New Zealand’s most historically significant buildings and take in panoramic views from Flagstaff Hill.

Overnight in Russell

DAY 6 - BAY OF ISLANDS - AUCKLAND (B/-/-)

Following breakfast, travel south through charming rural towns and along beautiful coastal stretches before arriving in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest and most cosmopolitan city. On arrival, enjoy a sightseeing tour of the renowned “City of Sails,” featuring panoramic views from Bastion Point, the boutique ambiance of Parnell Village, picturesque waterfront bays, and the vibrant Viaduct Harbour precinct. Your visit also includes a guided tour of the Auckland Museum, offering an excellent introduction to the artistic traditions and rich cultures of the Pacific’s indigenous peoples.
Overnight in Auckland

DAY 7 - AUCKLAND TO COROMANDEL PENINSULA (B/-/-)

This morning after breakfast, travel across the fertile Hauraki Plains to Thames before making your way along the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula. This coastal drive is particularly scenic, and on a clear day you may even spot Auckland’s Sky Tower across the Firth of Thames. Enjoy a ride on the Driving Creek Railway, climbing 120 metres along a narrow-gauge track to the EyeFull Tower, where you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Hauraki Gulf. Continue east across the peninsula through beautiful landscapes to reach the resort town of Whitianga on Mercury Bay.
Overnight in Whitianga

DAY 8 - COROMANDEL PENINSULA (B/-/-)

Begin the day with breakfast before exploring the natural highlights of the Coromandel Peninsula. White cliffs, golden beaches, turquoise waters, and lush green forests define this region, with vivid scarlet pōhutukawa trees in bloom during summer. Visit Hot Water Beach, where warm mineral springs bubble up through the sand and, when tides allow, you can dig your own natural spa pool. Continue with a scenic walk to Cathedral Cove, spending time appreciating one of New Zealand’s most photogenic beaches before returning along the same track. Next, travel to Cooks Beach, named after Captain James Cook, who sailed HMS Endeavour into Mercury Bay in 1769. Renowned for its long stretch of golden sand, it remains a popular summer retreat for locals. From here, you may either take a short ferry back to Whitianga and walk to your accommodation or return with your driver.
Overnight in Whitianga

DAY 9 - COROMANDEL PENINSULA - ROTORUA (B/-/-)

After breakfast, travel along the Pacific Coast Highway through the beachside towns of Whangamatā and Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty before turning inland for a scenic bushwalk with lookout points over Okere Falls. Continue on to Rotorua, the epicentre of New Zealand’s geothermal activity and Māori heritage. No visit to Rotorua is complete without a stop at Te Puia, where you will explore active geothermal sites, visit the national centre for indigenous arts and crafts, and learn about Kiwi conservation initiatives. At Te Puia, you will be accompanied by a private guide throughout your visit.
Overnight in Rotorua

DAY 10 - ROTORUA (B/-/D)

A delicious breakfast awaits you at the hotel. Today you may choose between two excursions:

Visit the Waimangu Volcanic Valley
Created by the eruption of Mt. Tarawera in 1886, this dramatic event buried local Māori villages and destroyed the world-famous Pink and White Terraces, once considered the eighth wonder of the world. The eruption reshaped the entire landscape, forming the valley you can now walk through, passing boiling craters and jewel-coloured steaming lakes. Enjoy a cruise on Lake Rotomahana to the site of the former terraces, learn the story of Guide Sophia, and see the new silica terraces that are slowly forming today.

Experience the real Middle-earth at the Hobbiton Movie Set
Explore the enchanting setting of The Shire from Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films. Your Hobbiton guide will lead you through the ten-acre site, sharing insights into how the set was built (this tour is joined by other visitors). See the iconic Hobbit Holes, the Green Dragon Inn, The Millhouse, and other film structures, and discover how lush Waikato farmland became the Shire of Middle-earth. At Bagshot Row, you will enjoy an authentic look into Hobbit life, including time to explore one of two beautifully crafted Hobbit Holes.

This evening, visit Tamaki Māori Village for Te Pā Tū. This seasonal evening experience and feast aligns with the maramataka (Māori lunar calendar). Immerse yourself in Māori song, tradition, and exquisite seasonal kai (cuisine) within the forest Pā, surrounded by towering tawa trees, blazing bonfires, and a naturally formed amphitheatre. The hākari (feast) begins with forest horotai (canapés) and culminates in a lavish four-course fusion dinner. Hāngī features prominently in the seasonal menus, crafted by Māori chefs and served either al fresco in warm weather or in the wharekai (dining house) when cooler.
During summer, Tū Te Rā celebrates harvest and themes of ancient Māori warfare and peace. In winter, Tū Te Ihi honours the Matariki star cluster with ritual, energy, and storytelling. Return hotel transfers are included; other travellers will join this experience.
Overnight in Rotorua

DAY 11 - ROTORUA – NAPIER (B/-/D)

Following breakfast, visit the powerful Huka Falls before enjoying scenic views of vast Lake Taupō, with the volcanic peaks of Ruapehu, Ngāuruhoe, and Tongariro rising in the distance. Continue on to Napier, home to one of the world’s most complete collections of Art Deco architecture. This afternoon, enjoy a guided walking tour of Napier, learning about the city’s rebirth following the devastating 1931 earthquake. This evening, enjoy dinner at Mission Estate Winery, New Zealand’s oldest winery, set in beautifully restored seminary buildings overlooking the city.
Overnight in Napier

DAY 12 - NAPIER - WELLINGTON (B/-/-)

Begin the day with breakfast before traveling through the vineyards and orchards of Hawke’s Bay and the bush-clad ranges of the Wairarapa en route to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. On arrival, view the Parliament Buildings, including the iconic Beehive. From the Kelburn lookout, take a ride on the Wellington Cable Car before visiting Te Papa Museum, one of the world’s most engaging museums, offering deep insight into New Zealand’s culture, people, land, and wildlife.
Overnight in Wellington

DAY 13 - WELLINGTON – USA/CANADA (B/-/-)

In the morning after breakfast, at the arranged time, you will be picked up and transferred to Wellington International Airport for your flight back home.

This often happens at the last moment and is controlled by airline staff, with Indus Travel not being notified. Passengers are encouraged to reconfirm their seat assignments and any other special requests directly with their airline prior to departure.

Should I check-in online?

It always recommended and more convenient to check in online. It will shorten your waiting time at the airport, secure your seat assignments and other reservations.

Can I request a special meal on the flight?

Requests may be made for special meals. These requests will be sent on your behalf to the airline so long as Indus receives these request prior to your documents being issued. The availability of special meals will be based upon the specific airlines and will be at their discretion.

Can I use my frequent flier miles?

Accrued frequent flier miles cannot be used toward the purchase of Indus Travels’ airfare or used for class upgrades. However, airfare purchased through Indus Travels may qualify to earn you additional miles.
