DAY 2 - BUENOS AIRES (ARRIVAL) (-/-/-)

Welcome to Argentina! Upon arrival at Buenos Aires International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Buenos Aires – is not only the capital of Argentina; it is also one of the 10 most important metropolises in the world and the centre of the political, economic and intellectual life of the country. This cosmopolitan city - with great European cultural influence - displays a refined taste in its cooking, in its ”boutiques” and in the elegance of its inhabitants. Almost 12 million people live there and can enjoy the plentiful night life visiting ”tango” bars, cabarets, discotheques, restaurants or eternally open bars. During the day, a wide variety of attractions is offered: museums, art galleries, tasteful shops, fascinating antiques, large green areas, parks, wide tree lined boulevards, clubs and sporting events. The Italian-Spanish descent of the inhabitants has formed this modern metropolis. Feel the flair, above all in the Italian old quarter La Boca and in the wide streets with cafes from the turn of the century. At the Plaza de Mayo, in the political centre of town, is the starting point of this tour through this exciting capital. The widest street of the world, the very famous opera house and also the shopping street Florida make Buenos Aires unforgettable.

Overnight in Buenos Aires

DAY 3 - BUENOS AIRES (B/-/D)

After breakfast, meet your guide at the reception and start the day with a Half Day city tour.During your city tour in Buenos Aires you will drive along 9 de Julio Avenue, the widest avenue of the world, you will pass close to the Colon Theatre, one of the world's best known opera houses and the cultural pride of the "bonaerenses". Visit the famous Avenida de Mayo that runs into the Plaza De Mayo, surrounded by the Casa Rosada (Government House), the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Cabildo (first City Hall, built during Spanish rule). At the other end of Avenida de Mayo the cupola of the Congress building can be seen. Stop and visit inside of the Metropolitan Cathedral - the imposing neo-classical building, which is Argentina´s main catholic building. The mausoleum of General San Martin is located inside the Cathedral, and Pope Francisco used to celebrate religious services in this Cathedral when he was cardinal of Buenos Aires city. You will stop for a cup of coffee and a snack at a traditional coffee house. Your next stop is La Boca, a most colorful area with the famous street Caminito. Continue to the north area and visit the Recoleta area, one of the city’s most glamorous spots. Here you will see elegant boutiques and excellent restaurants, surrounded by centennial trees.  The heart of the neighborhood is the Recoleta cemetery. The cemetery is the centre of this aristocratic neighborhood, and the most relevant personalities of Argentina’s history rest in this place. The mausoleums and pantheons reflect the architectural diversity emerging from the different cultural tendencies Argentina incorporated in its formation as a nation. The cemetery is considered to be one of the most impressive monuments of Argentina. 30min stop includes visit of Eva Duarte`s grave, known as Eva Perón (Evita).

In the evening you will be taken to the tango house Viejo Almacén, because visiting a Tango Show is a MUST when you are in Buenos Aires! El Viejo Almacén became a unique place thanks to its historic location and an authentic style nourished by popularity built through the years. Every night its doors are open to enjoy an impressive tango show performed by prominent interpreters of the tango scene, a demonstration of Andean music, as well as exquisite cuisine. The Tango tradition started at the end of the 19th century, and developed out of a mixture of various rhythms, which were originally danced in the poorer neighborhoods. Tango is reflecting the nostalgia and melancholy of the European immigrants and brought up some great musicians, such as Astor Piazzolla and Anibal Troilo. You will enjoy a show with music, singing and dancing. The dinner includes entrée, main course, dessert & drinks. After the tango show return to the hotel, arrival around midnight.

Upon arrival, enjoy a brief orientation tour of the city en route to your hotel, including a photo stop at one of Ushuaia’s scenic viewpoints overlooking the Beagle Channel. With its dramatic backdrop of snow-capped mountains and icy waters, Ushuaia has inspired explorers, writers, and scientists alike — from Darwin and Fitz Roy to Jules Verne and Emilio Salgari. DAY 6 - USHUAIA (B/-/-)

Today, after breakfast, you will go on a half day tour to the Tierra del Fuego National Park, where you will get the impression as if time goes slower than anywhere else. Overnight in Ushuaia

DAY 7 - USHUAIA - TRELEW - PUERTO MADRYN (BY FLIGHT) (B/-/-)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Trelew. Upon arrival, travel by road to Punta Tombo Reserve, located approximately 129 km (80 miles) south of Trelew. This extraordinary coastal sanctuary is one of the most important seabird nesting sites in South America. The reserve hosts diverse species including guanacos, ñandúes (rheas), Patagonian hares, sea lions, and three protected species of cormorants. But the true stars of Punta Tombo are the Magellanic penguins. Each year, from mid-September, more than one million penguins migrate here to breed and raise their young. Stroll along scenic boardwalks for an up-close encounter with these charming, flightless birds in their natural habitat — an unforgettable wildlife experience. After your visit, continue on to your hotel in Puerto Madryn, a coastal city located on the shores of the Nuevo Gulf, about 61 km (38 miles) north of Trelew. Founded by Welsh settlers, Puerto Madryn offers a charming blend of tree-lined avenues, seaside promenades, lively restaurants, and a laid-back atmosphere. It also serves as the perfect base for exploring the Valdés Peninsula, a UNESCO-listed natural reserve teeming with marine life including sea lions, elephant seals, guanacos, penguins, and seasonal southern right whales.

Note:

# Depending on the travel date, there may not be a direct flight from Ushuaia to Trelew. In such cases, the route may involve a stopover in Buenos Aires or El Calafate. On certain dates, flights may go directly to Puerto Madryn.

# Punta Tombo Reserve is open seasonally from mid-September to March, aligned with penguin migration patterns. For early September groups (#5 & #6), the visit depends on the park’s opening date. Alternate arrangements may be made as needed.

Overnight in Ushuaia

DAY 8 - PUERTO MADRYN - VALDES - PUERTO MADRYN (B/-/-)

After breakfast, meet with the guide, and start the day by departing from Puerto Madryn on a drive to the Valdés Peninsula. You will visit the sea lion colony of Punta Piramides. Continue to Punta Cantor, the southern point of Caleta Valdés where you can observe sea elephants on the shore. On the way back, drive along a strip of land that connects to the continent: the Ameghino Isthmus, with its interesting interpretation center. During the day, stop at different viewpoints to observe local fauna like guanacos, rheas, foxes, maras, armadillos, choiques, skunks, and more. After the tour, you will be dropped back to your hotel.

Overnight in Puerto Madryn

DAY 9 - PUERTO MADRYN - TRELEW - EL CALAFATE (BY FLIGHT) (B/-/-)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to El Calafate. Located on the southern shore of Lake Argentino, El Calafate is a charming Patagonian village and the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just 80 km (50 miles) from the majestic Perito Moreno Glacier, the town has become a popular base for exploring southern Patagonia’s natural wonders, nestled between El Chaltén in Argentina and Torres del Paine in Chile. With its alpine-inspired architecture, cozy cafés, artisan chocolate shops, and a growing selection of hotels and restaurants, El Calafate blends rustic charm with warm hospitality. It also houses Glaciarium, the first museum in the region dedicated to glaciers and ice — a fascinating introduction to the area’s icy giants. Upon arrival at El Calafate Airport, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for check-in. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure in this scenic mountain town.

Note: There is no regular direct flight from Trelew to El Calafate. Depending on your travel date, the journey may include a stopover in Buenos Aires or begin in Puerto Madryn.

Overnight in Calafate

DAY 10 - CALAFATE - PERITO MORENO - CALAFATE (B/-/-)

Today, after breakfast, you will go on a full day tour to the Perito Moreno Glacier. After a drive through the National Park Los Glaciares one arrive all of a sudden in a forest full of colours, before one sees - equally unexpected - the glacier Perito Moreno. This is one of the few glaciers that are still growing. Every 4 to 5 years it covers the gap between the mainland and itself and grows into the Lago Argentino. Eventually the ice cannot resist the enormous pressure of the water and crashes with a frightening noise. One can watch this glacier spectacle every day when single ice blocks fall into the lake. Considering that the glacier is 5 km long and 70 m high one can imagine the noise this makes. Here we will have 2 hours to experience the glacier before driving back to El Calafate

Overnight in Calafate

DAY 11 - CALAFATE - BUENOS AIRES (BY FLIGHT) (B/-/-)

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Buenos Aires. Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, you will be transferred to the hotel. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight in Buenos Aires

Argentina Explorer
The Argentina Explorer tour by Indus Travels was an absolute highlight of my travel year! This 12-day small-group adventure perfectly captured the essence of Argentina, starting with the electric vibe of Buenos Aires—complete with Plaza de Mayo, the colorful La Boca neighborhood, and a fantastic tango show dinner—then heading south to the wildlife wonders of Valdés Peninsula and Punta Tombo for incredible penguin and sea lion encounters, the end-of-the-world charm of Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego National Park, and finally the jaw-dropping spectacle of the Perito Moreno Glacier in El Calafate, where we watched massive ice chunks calve into the lake. Everything was seamlessly organized with comfortable accommodations, included domestic flights, daily breakfasts, expert English-speaking guides, and just the right mix of guided sightseeing and free time. At around $5-6k starting price, it offered outstanding value for such a comprehensive Patagonia and culture-packed experience—ideal for first-timers to South America. I returned home with unforgettable memories and can't recommend this tour enough! 5/5 stars.
