Croatia is One of Europe’s Hottest Destinations Right Now

There’s no denying it: Croatia is hot right now. And I’m not talking about degrees Celsius (although it has to be said, with an average temperature of 23 degrees in Dubrovnik in May and 25 degrees in Zagreb in June, Croatia is one great spring-into-summer destination choice)—I’m talking about the fact that there’s no arguing that Croatia is one cool travel hotspot right now.

Croatia is having its moment in the spotlight. Today’s travelers are looking beyond the likes of France and Spain when it comes to choosing the coolest European getaway—which is making Croatia one hot-to-trot destination right now. So much so that the country won the coveted ‘Best European Destination’ award in the 2019 Travvy Awards (the Oscars of the travel industry). So what are you waiting for? Come with us on the journey of a lifetime and enjoy one of the hottest destinations on the face of the planet…

DUBROVNIK

It’s hard not to wax lyrical about the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’. After all, it was George Bernard Shaw said: “If you want to see heaven on earth, come to Dubrovnik.” And who are we to argue with him?

With its impressive stone fortifications, immaculate medieval architecture, cool cafes and dazzling blue waters wherever you look, there’s just no denying that this is one of the world’s most breathtaking cities.

Dubrovnik Hot Tip: Take the Dubrovnik cable car to the top of Mount Srd. You’ll be rewarded with some spectacular views over the Old Town and the shoreline and you can also visit the Museum of the Croatian War of Independence up there.

SPLIT

Back in 305 AD, when the most powerful man in the world—Emperor Diocletian—was choosing where to spend his retirement, he promptly chose Split. And it’s easy to see why.

Today his Palace stands as testament to his good architectural taste. Take a walk through the palace area and see how the local people have lived and evolved in the palace’s footprint over the centuries. Then swing by Sperun, a rustic eatery with a quaint retro feel, for some easy-on-the-wallet local seafood.

Split Hot Tip: If you’re hitting Split some time between mid-July and mid-August, you’ll be lucky enough to catch the Split Summer Festival. Sites across the city, including Diocletian’s Palace, come to life with open-air performances at this time of year.

ZADAR

Prepare yourself: Zadar is smoking hot right now! Having just been named one of the ‘Best Cities in Travel 2019’ by Lonely Planet, Zadar is one of the coolest cities in the world—not just Europe—to visit right now.

Take a stroll along Kalelarga Street, soak up the sight of the lovely 9th century Church of St Donatus, see the city’s coat of arms engraved on the 15th century Mainland Gate, and climb up the 13th century Captain’s Tower for some great views.

Zadar Hot Tip: Stay in Zadar for sunset. Not only does the city offer one of the best sunsets that Europe has to offer, but it also has a very special ‘Greeting to the Sun’ art installation that comes to light at dusk. Created by the architect Nikola Bašić, the installation’s collection of glass solar plates brighten up each evening with disco dancefloor-type lighting!

ZAGREB

The best way to discover Croatia’s vibrant capital is on foot, so grab your comfy shoes and get exploring! You’ll find a city where history blends effortlessly with modern art, a thriving business culture and traditionally warm Croatian hospitality.

Gaze up at the twin neo-Gothic spires of Zagreb Cathedral, grab a cheap lunch at Dolac Market or head to the main square of Trg Bana Jelacica, with its statue of the Croatian hero Josip Jelacic. The statue dates back to 1866, but it was removed in 1947 when Yugoslavia was reformed. It was returned to its proud spot in 1990, just prior to the break up of Yugoslavia. The square is also a great place to stop for a contemplative beer.

Zagreb Hot Tip: Have you just gone through a nasty break up? Then pop into Zagreb’s Museum of Broken Relationships. Located in the heartbreakingly beautiful baroque Kulmer Palace in the Upper Town, the museum features an ever-growing collection of mementos of relationships past, accompanied by personal, anonymous notes by their contributors. After browsing the exhibits, you can always pull yourself together with a traditional Croatian pasty in the Brokenships Museum Café.
