Activities in Victoria Falls

Recognized as the adventure capital of South Africa, Victoria Falls offers a wide range of activities for all kinds of adventure seekers. From calm river cruises to adrenaline-pumping bungee jumps, this adventure capital truly offers something for every traveler.

The first and obvious thing you should do at Victoria Falls, of course, is to see the falls themselves. Also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (meaning “the smoke that thunders”), this gorgeous attraction offers extraordinary sights of the Zambezi River along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Although simply seeing the falls is a breathtaking experience, to really get up close and personal, you need to visit Devil’s Pool. Here, you can swim right up to the lip of the falls. Devil’s Pool is the ultimate infinity pool, where you may look over the edge down the 100m drop. When water levels are low enough, usually for a couple months a year, the natural rock walls will reach the surface and form a barrier to prevent you from being swept over the edge.

This may sound terrifying, but it’s nothing compared to some of the other adventure activities in the area. If you’re in need of a stomach-dropping adrenaline kick, you might want to bungee jump, which includes a 110m freefall off the Victoria Falls Bridge towards the Zambezi River. You may  also abseil, zipline, or swing across the Batoka Gorge Down River. Or perhaps you want to experience the thrills of the river by jet boating or white-water rafting the Grade 5 rapids, which boast names such as “Stairway to Heaven” and “Oblivion.”

At Victoria Falls, you will also have the opportunity to take your adventure into the sky with a helicopter ride known as the Flight of Angels. This flight is named after David Livingstone’s description of the waterfall, who said it was such an incredible scene it must have been “gazed upon by angels in their flight.” A helicopter ride is the best way to see the 360-degree aerial views of the area and marvel over the largest waterfall in the world.

During your stay in Africa, you will probably want to see wildlife as well. For an unforgettable animal packed viewing adventure, embark on an elephant back safari through the reserve, which will end with time to interact with the majestic mammals one-on-one. Alternatively, check out Lion Encounter, an active conservation program that focuses on lion rehabilitation and releasing animals into the wild. Lion Encounter offers opportunities to walk with the magnificent species or volunteer and actively contribute to their efforts to save the lions.

Regardless of which activities you choose, whether tranquil or exhilarating, you will be guaranteed to have the time of your life in the magnificent playground of Victoria Falls.
