What to See in Bavaria, Germany

Bavaria is more than just the stereotype of Lederhosen, fairytale castles and huge steins of beer.

Of course, the countryside does make you feel like you have wandered into a storybook and the walled medieval towns will take you back in time. But Bavaria has more to offer than just its magical “once-upon-a-time” history. It also features world-class wineries, a fascinating, complex history, a state of the art modern motor industry, a thriving art and music scene and so much more.

Here are some of the top things to see while you are in Bavaria:

Zugspitze

Part of the stunning Wetterstein Alpine Mountain Range that stretches across the border of Austria and Germany, Zugspitze is the largest mountain in Germany. It’s popular with hikers, so you may want to take the challenge of climbing to the top. However, if you want to take it easy you can use the cable car to get to the summit and then walk down. Be sure to stop at the lovely restaurant at Zugspitze-West Gipfel Station and enjoy lunch with a view.

Berchtesgaden National Park

The name of this national park might be difficult to pronounce, but it is easy to enjoy. The pristine forests and stunning mountain plateaus are a paradise for hikers. Bring a good pair of shoes and a camera with plenty of memory space.

Lindau

Lindau is the largest town on the shores of Lake Constance and it is one of the prettiest little towns in Bavaria. Take a stroll through and you’ll discover an abundance of gardens and plenty of Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque architecture in the pedestrian-friendly historic Old Town.

The Romantic Road

This 291 mile long journey is one of the most scenic drives in Europe and it takes you along the path of an ancient Roman road, passing through picturesque Bavarian countryside and many lovely historic towns. It ends at the remarkable Neuschwanstein Castle, which is so pretty it doesn’t even look real.

Bamberg

This adorable little town is an ideal day trip from the nearby city of Nuremberg. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site status, thanks to the stunning Baroque and Medieval architecture in the well-preserved town center. As you wander through the winding streets you’ll soon discover why this is often voted one of the most beautiful towns in Germany.

These are just a few of the best things to see and do while you explore Bavaria. Plus, the Bavarian people are laid back, friendly and happy to show you around their region in the southeast corner of Germany.
