3 Unmissable European Cities

When it comes to art, architecture, history, gastronomy and nightlife, Europe certainly does pack a punch. So how can you make the very most of a one or two-week vacation? That’s easy. Just make sure you make a cultural pit-stop in these three unmissable European cities…

Unmissable European City #1: Amsterdam

If you’re looking for an urban vibe that’s utterly unique, look no further than Amsterdam. With its live-and-let-live attitude, fascinating history, gorgeous parks, and fabulous museums all knitted together within a tapestry of picturesque canals and quaint bridges, Amsterdam is a European city that simply can’t be missed.

One of the best ways to explore the city is to do as the Amsterdammers do—and jump on a bicycle. It’s a surprisingly compact city and almost all of the major attractions can be found within the city center, which makes two-wheels the preferred mode of transport.

To see some of the finest works of art that Europe has to offer, peddle your way to the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum. Browse the organic market in Jordaan or the chic boutiques in Oud-Zuid. Sip coffee in the uber-hip NDSM district or sample international cuisine in Oosterpark. And relax as you gaze upon the elegant architecture of De Plantage or stop for a well-earned rest in the sun at Vodelpark or Westerpark.

Unmissable European City #2: Berlin

Cities don’t really get any cooler than Berlin. With its palpable history, far-out art scene, awesome architecture, crazy clubs, and undeniable focus on personal freedom, this trendsetter of Western Europe can out-cool any other European metropolis at 100 paces.

Take a stroll along the remnants of the Berlin Wall, sip some of the world’s best beer in a beer garden, or dance the night away to hardcore techno beats. Make your way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Museum Island, where you can explore the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Pergamon Museum, the Bode Museum, and the Alte Nationalgalarie to your heart’s content. Batter your credit card on designer finds on Kurfurstendamm or sip a coffee by the Landwehr Canal. Soak up iconic sites like the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag, or—for a truly phenomenal view of the entire city—take a trip to the top of the famous TV Tower.

And don’t wait around, because this year is sure to be a particularly fascinating time to visit Berlin, as the city is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus and 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Unmissable European City #3: Prague

Many European cities claim to embody a fairy tale ambiance, but none of them can claim to be as magical as Prague. Known as the ‘City of a Hundred Spires’, taking a trip to Prague is like taking a step back in time. It may be the modern and dynamic capital of the Czech Republic, but it has managed not to lose any of its magical, fairy-tale grandeur.

Climb up the Old Castle Steps and hunt out the picturesque courtyards of the Old Royal Palace, see where Pagan princes prayed to forest idols at Vysehrad, cross the magnificently medieval Charles Bridge, see where alchemists once lived on Golden Lane, or head to the Old Town Square to see the Apostles of the Old Town Hall Astronomical Clock perform for tourists every hour.

Shop for luxury brands on Parizska Street, dine in the restaurants and cafes of Kampa in the Lesser Town, or make your way to the Rasin Embankment to be swept away at the sight of Prague’s famous ‘Dancing House’: a modern building that has two towers that are said to be reminiscent of an embracing Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
