Enjoy your morning at leisure. This afternoon tour through Lima’s streets and plazas. Starting at Love Park in Miraflores with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean before heading to Huaca Pucllana, a ceremonial center of Lima culture. After this, we will travel to the Main Square where the Government Palace and the Town Hall are located. We will visit the Cathedral and explore the Santo Domingo Convent, along whose corridors San Martin de Porras and San Rosa de Lima used to walk in the 17th century, and where their remains rest today. LIMA – PUERTO MALDONADO (BY FLIGHT) (B/L/D)
This morning after breakfast you will be transferred back to the airport for a flight to Puerto Maldonado. Upon your arrival in Puerto Maldonado, Peru’s capital of biodiversity, you will be met and transferred to Puerto Capitanía, the port where a riverboat will be waiting to transport you along the Rio Madre de Dios to the jungle lodge, 30 km away from Puerto Maldonado. If the weather is good, you will sight colorful plants like the large-flowered heliconias, and you will have the chance to observe animals such as capybaras, caimans, water turtles, herons, cormorants, carrion birds and birds of prey. Upon arrival at the lodge, you will be welcomed with delicious Amazon tropical fruit nectars and taken to your comfortable room (bungalow). Once you are settled your room, a hearty lunch will be served for you in the warm, rustically designed dining room. This afternoon, your specialized guide will take you along an interpretive trail to Caiman Cocha, a little lagoon where you will have the opportunity to see black caiman and the common caiman. They feed on rich water fauna—mainly represented by fish— that inhabit the pond. At dusk, you will witness the spectacular sunset, an experience full of color and intensity. Back at the lodge, a delicious dinner will await you. The night fauna will lull you to sleep with the melody of a huge number of bird songs and calls. PUERTO MALDONADO (B/L/D)
Magic begins with birds singing and waking up to calls of howler monkeys. A hearty breakfast will provide you with the necessary energy for a morning full of new experiences. After breakfast, you will start with a hike to the deep forest. On the way, you will cross the riverside to reach high-elevation forests, descend to floodable forests before making ones way up hill again. During the hike, you will see a widest range of flora and fauna; you will see diverse species of medicinal plants and fruit trees supporting local animal and human populations. Some of the most important are the moriche palm, mahogany, chestnut, catahua, cedar, trumpet-wood, copaiba, and shihuahuaco. With luck and in silence, you may see bigger mammals, like the Brazilian tapir and the white-lipped peccary; rodents like the giant otter, the capybara, the spotted paca and the armadillo; primates like the coto or howler monkey, the squirrel monkey, the lion monkey and the black-cap capuchin monkey; reptiles like the iguana and the bothrops atrox; amphibians like the toad and birds like the guan, the partridge, the golden parakeet and the blue, yellow and red macaw! We’ll arrive at majestic Lake Apu Victor surrounded by immense swamps and gigantic trees. Then, we’ll go up an Amazonian observation deck, from where you’ll have panoramic views of the canopy, the lake, and an abundance of birds: parrots, macaws, toucans, horned screamers, hoatzins, herons and other animals like caimans, turtles, etc. Back at the lodge, a refreshing lunch will be waiting for you. This afternoon with your specialist guide you will visit Monkey Island, few minutes away from the lodge in the center of Madre de Dios River. This island shows an enormous variety of flora and hosts numerous primate specimens like the black spider monkey, the black-cap capuchin monkey, the squirrel monkey and the lion monkey. PUERTO MALDONADO – CUSCO (BY FLIGHT) (B/-/-)
After a restful night’s sleep, the powerful roars of the howler monkey (Alouatta senículus) warn visitors that they are in its territory and that it’s time to leave. In the dining room, your breakfast will be prepared before being taken back to Puerto Maldonado to check in for the flight to Cusco. After a spectacular flight over the snowcapped Andes to the oldest inhabited city in the hemisphere, Cusco, at an elevation of 11,440 feet you will be met and transferred to the hotel. Later in the afternoon, you will enjoy a tour around the city. From the hotel, you will walk to the Saint Blas district where you will visit the house of a local artisan to see their exhibition of art. From Saint Blas you will walk along Hatun Rumiyoc Street, where midway along we will find the Inca Roca Palace, today the Archbishop’s Palace; you will have time to appreciate the famous Stone of the Twelve Angles. You will go on to the Main Square to see the architecture of the Cathedral and enjoy a beautiful view of the main square. Finally, you will see Koricancha Temple and learn about its importance during the Inca period. Overnight in Cusco
CUSCO – MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO (B/L/-)
This morning you will be transferred to Ollantaytambo train station, where you will depart by train to visit one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. You arrive at the Aguas Calientes station where our staff will assist you on boarding the bus to go up the winding road to Machu Picchu, amid a spectacular view of the Urubamba River and its canyon. The Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu, will astonish you with its terraces, ceremonial shrines, steps and urban areas. Energy is all around you. After a guided tour, you will have lunch at a local restaurant. At the arranged time, you will take the train back to Ollantaytambo, and then transfer by car to our hotel in Cusco.
